Well Child Check & Sports Physical

A Well Child Check is your child’s growth, health and wellness at specific age milestones. During the first few years of life your child will have more frequent Well Child Checks to monitor their growth patterns, provide you with education about their behavior milestones, and administer any necessary vaccines. After the age of 3, your child will only have one Well Child Check per year until the age of 18. As the Well Child Checks become annual, it’s important that you let us know about any changes your child has experienced during the year such as new allergies, medications from specialists, surgeries or hospital stays, new pets, and any changes in the family home.

The annual Well Child Check counts as a child’s sports physical, therefore there is no need to seek out another provider or clinic for a separate sports physical.

Sick Visits

Our sick visits or sometimes called an Ill visit, cover everything other than a Well Child Check. This includes:

  • Cold & flu symptoms: cough, sore throat, congestion, body aches, fever, runny nose
  • Constipation, diarrhea, stomach pain, trouble urinating, pain with urination
  • Skin issues: diaper rash, eczema, dandruff, lice
  • Pink eye, ear pain, ear drainage
  • Dehydration,
  • Asthma, asthma medication management, shortness of breath
  • Allergies
  • Headaches, migraines, trouble sleeping
  • Muscular pain, sprains
  • Concussion symptoms
  • Urgent Care and ED follow up
  • And much more

These visits are allotted for 15 minutes, and we typically keep 4-5 same day visits open for sick or urgent visits. At the start of the visit the Medical Assistant will take your child’s vital signs and it is important that during that time you inform the MA, of how long your child has been experiencing their symptoms, if you have given them any medications, what medications and how often, and if those medications have been helping. Based on the symptoms your child is experiencing, the MA may swab your child for diagnostic testing while you wait for the provider. After the MA is done, your provider will come in, review your child’s symptoms and the results of any diagnostic testing, prescribe medication if necessary and treatment. We always leave time at the end of the visit for you or your child to ask questions. We do our best to address all your concerns but we may ask to schedule a follow-up appointment at a later date to review additional concerns that can’t be addressed in the time constraints.

Immunizations

We follow the childhood immunization schedule according to the American Academy of Pediatrics. The Children’s Health Place believes immunizations are a safe and effective way to prevent disease, disability, and death. We encourage parents to make sure their child is vaccinated against childhood diseases as it is better to prevent a disease than to treat it or live with the symptoms of the disease. While we fully believe in vaccines, we also recognize vaccines are a tough topic for many families and you may choose not to vaccinate due to religious, medical, or personal reasons. We will remain open to your choice to vaccinate or not, however we will review each vaccine and the evidence-based data presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics, at each Well Child Check where vaccines are due. It is not our intent to pressure you, but to provide you with sufficient data so you can make an informed decision into the health of your child. If you would like to participate in an alternative vaccine schedule, please discuss this with your provider during your next appointment. Immunizations can be administered during a routine well child check, a shot-only appointment, or any other appointment as long as the child is not experiencing a fever of 101 degrees F or more.

If you choose not to vaccinate, you can obtain a Certificate of Nonmedical Exception by completing an online immunization education module; The Children’s Health Place providers will not sign a non-medical exemption form.

Meet the “Ped” (Pronounced “peed”)

A Meet the Ped is an appointment expecting parents can schedule where you can become acquainted with your baby’s Pediatric providers before delivery. You will have an opportunity to visit the office, meet our staff, and ask the providers questions about their approaches to pediatric health care. It’s the best time to determine if we are a good fit for you and your new family.

Newborn & Maternal Screening

The Newborn visit is typically the first visit we see a new baby. It is usually scheduled within 3-5 days of birth. During this visit the newborn is assessed by the provider to ensure proper growth in the first few days, but mostly it is a time to educate the parents on typical newborn behavior. This will include approximately how often and how much the baby should be eating, sleeping, how many wet diapers you can expect the baby to have and what the baby’s stool will look like in the first few days. Your provider will also discuss the baby’s safety at home and in the car and address any questions or concerns you have. At the 2 week, 1 month, and 2 month Well Check, the provider will also screen for Maternal Depression.

ADHD Consult & Follow Up Appointments

If you believe your child is exhibiting ADHD behavior or a friend, teacher, or relative has pointed out behaviors that could be attributed to ADHD and you would like to have your child evaluated, we are here to help. The first step is calling our office or talking to the provider at your child’s well check exam to schedule an ADHD consultation. During the ADHD consultation, the provider will evaluate your child based on a set of tools and evidence-based research methods to determine if your child has ADHD. During this appointment, you and the provider will discuss treatment options which can range from at-home behavior modifications, behavior therapy, medication, or a combination of treatments. If your child is diagnosed with ADHD, we will then expect to see your child every 6 months or as needed for follow-up appointments. The follow-up appointments help the provider determine if the ADHD behaviors are improving, getting worse, and if your child is on medication if that medication is working or needs to be modified.

Mental & Behavioral Health

A mental or behavioral health visit can cover many conditions including but not limited to, depression, anxiety, ADHD, difficulty sleeping, potty training, behavioral concerns, and suicide ideation. Through these visits, the provider can determine the best course of treatment, whether it be through additional provider visits in our office, therapy, medication or a combination of multiple modalities.

In 2025 we partnered with Great Plains Mental Health Partners, LLC, a team of mental health practitioners who hold in-person visits within our office, as well as telehealth visits. We may recommend them to our patients who would benefit from their services. Great Plains Mental Health Partners accepts pediatric patients as well as adult patients and has agreed to accept family members of our current patients. If you are interested in their services for your child please contact our office and request a referral. If you or another family member are interested in their services please visit their website at https://www.greatplainsmhp.org/

Shot Only Appointments

Most of the time vaccines will be administered during the Well Child Check, however there will be times when you may want to schedule a shot-only appointment. A shot-only appointment is scheduled with one of the Medical Assistants and typically only takes about 15 minutes or less.

During flu season we also offer parent flu shots which can be scheduled with a patient’s shot-only appointment or during another scheduled appointment.
